The Real Life Dracula: Vlad the Impaler & the Order of the Dragon — Silver Parvus

Own a Piece of the History Behind the Dracula Legend!

Long before Bram Stoker created his famous fictional vampire, Vlad III Dracula—better known as Vlad the Impaler—was a real medieval prince whose life became one of history's most enduring legends. This fascinating collectible connects the story of Dracula with the medieval rulers, wars, and secretive chivalric order that helped inspire the legend.

Included is an authentic silver parvus struck during the reign of Sigismund of Luxembourg (1387–1427), together with an illustrated presentation and certificate of authenticity explaining the historical connection to Dracula and the Order of the Dragon.

The Historical Connection

Following the disastrous Battle of Kosovo Field in 1389, Sigismund of Luxembourg became deeply involved in the struggle against the expanding Ottoman Empire. In 1408, he established the Order of the Dragon, a chivalric order dedicated to defending Christianity and opposing the Turks.

One of its notable members was Vlad II, Prince of Wallachia and father of Vlad III. When Vlad II joined the order in 1431, he received the name Dracul, derived from the Romanian word for dragon. His son, Vlad III, subsequently became known as Dracula—"Son of the Dragon."

The connection between the Order of the Dragon and Vlad III helped contribute to the historical identity behind the Dracula legend.

The Silver Parvus

This small medieval silver coin was struck during the reign of Sigismund of Luxembourg, the king associated with the founding of the Order of the Dragon. The Crusader cross appearing on the reverse is particularly appropriate to the historical story surrounding the order and its campaign against the Ottoman Turks.

Importantly, Vlad III Dracula did not mint his own coins, making coins from the period of his father, his contemporaries, and the rulers connected to his story especially interesting to collectors of Dracula history.
