Why pre-1921 specifically? The 1921 Morgan Dollar was minted in the tens of millions, by far the most common date in the series. Pre-1921 issues had lower mintages, saw decades of real-world circulation, and lost millions more to the Pittman Act of 1918, which mandated the melting of over 270 million silver dollars. What survived is genuinely old, genuinely scarce by comparison, and genuinely collectible. Pre-1921 Morgans carry two values simultaneously: the intrinsic silver melt value and a numismatic premium that common-date 1921s simply don't command.

What VG–XF means for your coin: These coins graded VG (Very Good, Sheldon scale 8–10) through XF (Extremely Fine, 40–45) show wear consistent with real circulation in 19th and early 20th century America, but all major design details remain clear and visible. At the XF end, only the highest relief points show wear, with partial original luster still present. At VG, the design is fully identifiable with honest, even wear.
