In 2021, the U.S. Mint revived the beloved Morgan and Peace Dollar series, marking the 100th anniversary since the last Morgan and first Peace Dollar were issued in 1921. They made a great comeback, selling out almost instantly from the mint and continuing to be in high demand on the secondary market to this day!
Initially, enthusiasts expected the modern Peace and Morgans to make a comeback in 2022. However, due to a lack of silver blanks, no coins were released that year. Fortunately, they have made a triumphant return in 2023!
Vintage Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars
The Morgan Silver Dollar and the Peace Silver Dollar are among the most collected vintage coins ever! That's in part because of their exceptional, iconic designs and in part because of the role they played during exciting, turbulent, significant periods of American history.
The Morgan Silver Dollar, minted from 1878 to 1904 and once more in 1921, is known as the Silver Dollar that helped build the Old West. On the other hand, the Peace Silver Dollar, introduced in 1921, symbolized the nation's aspirations for peace and prosperity following World War I. Interestingly, 1921 was the unique year when both these distinct silver dollar designs were issued. The Peace Dollar continued its mintage until 1928 and was revived in 1934 and 1935.
2021 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars: Honoring the 100th Anniversary
If you're a coin collector, you probably remember that in 2021 the U.S. Mint brought both the Morgan Silver Dollar and the Peace Silver Dollar back to honor the 100-year anniversaries of the last minting of the Morgan and the first minting of the Peace. The same size as the originals, these modern silver dollar coins were the first legal-tender Morgan and Peace Dollars in 100 years! Crafted using modern technology these coins brilliantly highlighted their classic designs with enhanced precision and detail.
The release was a massive success, with instant sell-out at the mint. Following the 2021 release, the secondary market has continued to see demand for those first year of issue coins, even in 2023.
Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act
The 2021 morgan and peace dollar coins were authorized by the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, signed into law by former President Donald Trump on January 5, 2021, requiring "the Department of the Treasury to mint and issue coins in honor of the 100th anniversary of the completion of coinage of the Morgan dollar and the 100th anniversary of the commencement of coinage of the Peace dollar."
2023 Morgan Silver Dollars and 2023 Peace Dollars Comeback
Many collectors weren't able to secure the 2021 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars due to limited mintage and extremely high demand. Moreover, in 2022, while the release of both coins was intended to be an annual event—the U.S. Mint was caught off-guard by the global shortage of the silver blanks required to strike the coins, and had to cancel the release.
However, in 2023 the U.S. Mint had issued 2023 Morgan and Peace Dollars again!. Not only will Uncirculated Silver Dollars be issued, but also the very first Proof releases and Reverse Proof versions later in the year.

The 2023-S Proof Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars depict the iconic design as the original coins but struck with a Proof finish, complete with the frosted devices and mirrored fields we all love. 2023 Morgan and Peace Dollars Are Struck in 99.9% Fine Silver. Unlike the vintage originals, which were struck in .90 silver and .10 copper, the 2023 Morgan Silver Dollars and Peace Silver Dollars are struck in .999 fine silver.
