Each coin offers a tangible connection to a fascinating period in Roman history when imperial women wielded extraordinary influence over the affairs of the empire.

Historical Significance

The collection features three remarkable women whose influence extended far beyond their traditional roles within the imperial household.

• Julia Domna (AD 193–217) – Empress of the Severan Dynasty: Wife of Emperor Septimius Severus and mother of emperors Caracalla and Geta, Julia Domna was one of the most influential women in Roman history. Renowned for her intelligence, political influence, and patronage of intellectual and cultural life, she played an important role in the Severan court.

• Julia Soaemias (AD 218–222) – Mother of Emperor Elagabalus: The mother of Emperor Elagabalus, Julia Soaemias was instrumental in securing her son's accession to the throne. She held considerable influence during his reign and was among the most politically prominent women of the Severan dynasty.

• Julia Maesa (AD 218–224/225) – The Power Behind the Throne: Sister of Julia Domna and grandmother of both Elagabalus and Severus Alexander, Julia Maesa was a formidable political figure. She orchestrated the rise of Elagabalus and later helped secure the succession of Severus Alexander, preserving the Severan dynasty during a period of political instability.

Together, these three women represent the extraordinary political reach of the imperial family and the important role women played in the governance of ancient Rome.
