The story of Geta is one of the most tragic and dramatic in all of Roman imperial history. As the youngest son of Emperor Septimius Severus and younger brother to Caracalla, Geta was born into one of the most powerful dynasties of the Roman Empire. Elevated to the rank of co-emperor alongside his father and brother in AD 209, Geta was intended to help continue the Severan dynasty after Severus’ death.

That future never came to pass.

When Septimius Severus died in AD 211, tensions between the two brothers erupted into violence. Caracalla, determined to rule alone, ordered the murder of Geta and many of his supporters. In the aftermath, Caracalla initiated a brutal damnatio memoriae—a “condemnation of memory”—designed to erase Geta from Roman history. Statues were destroyed, inscriptions were altered, portraits were removed, and his name was struck from official records.

Because of this systematic erasure, surviving coins bearing Geta’s image remain among the few authentic artifacts through which his likeness and legacy endure today.

This certified silver denarius provides a direct connection to one of the Roman Empire’s most infamous dynastic struggles and serves as a remarkable surviving witness to a ruler history tried to erase.

Details of This Unique Collection:

Historical Significance:
Geta ruled as co-emperor from AD 209–211 during the height of the Severan dynasty. Groomed alongside Caracalla to inherit the empire, his brief reign ended violently after the death of their father, Septimius Severus. The subsequent damnatio memoriae carried out by Caracalla led to the destruction of many representations of Geta, making surviving coins especially important historical artifacts. These denarii preserve the portrait and identity of an emperor whose memory was intentionally erased from much of the ancient world.

Authenticity:
This Roman AR (silver) denarius has been certified and encapsulated by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC Ancients) with a grade of Fine (F). The professional certification guarantees authenticity while offering secure long-term preservation, making it an excellent collectible for both ancient coin enthusiasts and history collectors.

Design:
The obverse features a portrait of Geta as Caesar, displaying the youthful image of the future emperor in traditional Roman imperial style. The surrounding Latin legends proclaim his titles and authority within the Severan dynasty. Like many Roman denarii of the period, the reverse design would have carried symbolic imagery tied to imperial power, military success, Roman virtues, or the favor of the gods. Despite centuries of age, the coin still reflects the artistry and propaganda central to Roman imperial coinage.

Why Collect This Rare Piece?

This coin is more than a piece of ancient silver—it is a surviving remnant of one of Rome’s most infamous political rivalries. While monuments and portraits of Geta were systematically destroyed nearly 1,800 years ago, his coins escaped complete annihilation and remain among the few surviving records of his existence.

For collectors, historians, and enthusiasts of the Roman Empire, this NGC-certified Geta Silver Denarius represents an extraordinary opportunity to own a genuine artifact from a turbulent chapter of imperial history—one marked by ambition, betrayal, and the ruthless struggle for absolute power.
