This Ancient Greek coin is full of lush history. Hieron II served as Tyrant of Syracuse from 270-215 BC. He was an illegitimate son of Hierocles, a Syracusan noble. From 263-215 BC, he was an important ally for Rome in the Punic war, providing them with both men and supplies.
The coin's obverse the fearsome Greek God Poseidon. He is depicted as a young man with curly hair, statuesque in appearance. The reverse features Poseidon's Trident framed on both sides by dolphins, which was a common motif for the God.
