2017-W $50 American Gold Eagle (Burnished)

2017-W $50 Burnished American Gold Eagle

The 2017-W $50 Burnished American Gold Eagle had a tiny mintage of just 5,800 coins struck at the West Point Mint. This special strike coins mintage was smaller than previous years and will command a slightly higher premium than the perfect condition coins of the past. Even with a small mintage, the 2017-W 1 oz Burnished American Gold Eagle is worth the effort to seek out and find with a sharp strike and attractive surfaces.

History of the 2017-W $50 Burnished American Gold Eagle

The 2017-W $50 Burnished American Gold Eagle is a beautiful coin that was struck with a burnished planchet which gives the coin a more satiny, matte look. The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the United States. The obverse of the American Gold Eagle was designed by Augustus Saint Gaudens, a rendition of the full-length Lady Liberty with her hair flowing and a long dress. She holds a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. There is a small image of the Capitol building in the background. The reverse of the coin was designed by sculptor, Miley Busiek. It features a male American Bald Eagle clutching an olive branch, flying over a nest with a female eagle and her eaglet.
