The reverse of the coin features a bison standing on a mound, while the obverse of the coin depicts the profile of a Native American chief that was sketched by designer, James Earle Fraser. Fraser also designed the beloved Type 1 Indian Head Nickel that inspired the designs of the Gold Buffalo coin.
