American Silver Eagle
Silver eagle coins were first minted in 1986 and continue to be circulated to this day. In 2010 a large number of silver eagles were produced. This upwards trend started in 2008 at the beginning of the financial crisis. There was an increased interest in the silver eagle coins between 2008 and 2012; this was mainly due to people wanting to invest in something they felt would hold its value. People no longer wanted to buy stocks and shares and instead started investing in precious metals. This was a tactic to hedge against losses in an unstable economy.
A large number of proof coins were minted in 2008. In 2009 no proofs were struck, and minting resumed in 2010 at the West Point facility. 860,000 proof coins were minted in 2010, an increase on the number minted in 2008 due to the staggering demand for the coins. In total, more than 35 million silver eagles were struck in 2010; this was far higher than in the previous ten years.
The silver eagles obverse design was created in 1916 by Adolph Weinman and depicts Liberty walking towards a sunrise. The coin's reverse has an eagle and shield and thirteen stars representing America's founding states.
