Silver Eagle History and Description

The obverse side of this 2008-W American Silver Eagle Proof features the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin design created by German-American sculptor and engraver Adolphe A. Weinman. The U.S. Mint reissued the design for its American Silver Eagle series owing to the collectibility and popularity of Walking Liberty coins.

In the design, Lady Liberty has her arm outstretched toward the sunlit horizon. In her other arm are branches of laurel and oak. This coin’s finely etched details can be seen in Liberty’s flowing hair and gown. Above her head is the word ‘Liberty.’ The year of issue is engraved below her. The motto ‘In God We Trust’ appears to her side.

The reverse side of the coin shows the heraldic American bald eagle that has been updated by the sculptor John Mercanti. Above the eagle’s head are the 13 stars that represent America’s original 13 colonies. This coin has a weight of 31.01g, a diameter of 40.6mm, and a reeded edge.
