History of the American Silver Eagle
The American Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle are the official bullion of the United States. These coins and the collectible proofs were first commissioned in 1986, and they continue to be a popular way to protect assets by buying precious metals across the world. The coin features the iconic Lady Liberty image that was first used on the Walking Liberty half dollar.
Design of Silver Eagle Coins
The obverse of the coin features the image of Lady Liberty striding across a sunrise landscape. The design was created by Adolph Weinman and it was used on the Walking Liberty half dollar from 1916 to 1947. The reverse features a modern version of the Heraldic Eagle designed by John Mercanti. The eagle is placed beneath 13 stars to represent the original 13 colonies of the United States. Each coin weighs one Troy ounce, has a reeded edge, is 2.98mm thick, and has a diameter of 40.6mm.
2006 Silver Eagle Prices and Mintage
Each coin has an official face value of $1 but these prized collectors items are generally sold for upwards of $100 if they have the PF70UCAM grade from NGC. A record number of proof silver eagles were printed in 2006. The West Point Mint struck 1,092,477 silver eagle proofs that year but less than 20,000 have been graded as PF70UCAM by NGC to date. This proof coin has held its value recent years and is an excellent coin to add to any coin collection.
