The Proof American Gold Buffalo was originally minted in 2006 and is still minted today. The obverse design of the American Proof Gold Buffalo features a Indian Head that was taken from James Earl Frasfer's original Buffalo Nickel design that was minted from 1913-1938. The reverse of the coin features a standing buffalo that was also designed by James Earl Fraser. The buffalo is supposed to the famous "Black Diamond" buffalo whose home was New York's Central Park Zoo. Each coin consists of one ounce of .9999 pure gold, making it one of the most pure gold bullion coins on the market. A key point to note is that in 2008 the U.S. Mint made a four coin proof gold buffalo set that featured a 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, and 1/10oz coin. This was a very low mintage four coin set.
