The American Proof Platinum Eagle was originally minted in 1997 at the West Point Mint and is still minted there today. The West Point Mint made four different denominations of the American Proof Platinum Eagles including a 1oz-$100, 1/2oz-$50, 1/4oz-$25, and 1/10oz-$10. From 1997-2008 the West Point Mint made all four denominations of the American Proof Platinum Eagle, but then in 2009 stopped and made only 1oz coins. The obverse design of the American Proof Platinum Eagle has featured the Statue of Liberty which was designed by John M. Mercanti, 12th chief engraver of the U.S. Mint. However, in 2018 the West Point Mint changed the obverse design and each year the obverse design has now changed. The reverse interestingly has been a different design every year since its inception in 1997.
