Silver Eagle Coins History

The first American Eagle Silver dollar was minted in 1986, governed by statute to protect the price of silver. Selling off silver stockpiles had led to a decline in silver prices and an-almost fully silver bullion (it is 0.03% copper) was thought a great way to sell off the stockpile.

Design specifics

The coin resurrects the iconic Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman, which is featured on the obverse with the phrases "In God We Trust" and "Liberty" embossed on the coin's face as well. Lady Liberty is striding towards the east holding laurel and oak to represent America's military strength and might. The stars and stripes are draped around her shoulders while the sun sets in the background. The date is marked at the bottom of the coin. The reverse bears the rendering of John Mercanti's heraldic eagle and shield, an olive branch grasped between the eagle's talon. Thirteen stars are situated above the eagle to represent the 13 colonies. The inscriptions of "United States of America," "1 Oz. Fine Silver," and "E Pluribus unum" can also be seen on the reverse. By 1994, the Philadelphia Mint started including its "P" mintmark on all coins it struck.
