These 1988-S Silver Eagles are the third year of issue in the series. Even with a healthy mintage of 557,370 coins, they are hard to find in nice condition. These amazing coins however are in a pristine PR70 DCAM from PCGS! We send in hundreds of these in their original mint packaging and only got FOUR back in a pristine 70. These are HARD to get!

The "S" mintmark prominently struck on the reverse shows that this piece was minted in San Francisco. This is also indicated on the label. These early Silver Eagles are incredible cornerstones in any collection, and while already rare, will only get even harder to get in high grades!

Highlights:

  • San Francisco mintmark
  • Perfect grade
  • Only 4 available!

Add the 1988-S proof 70 silver eagle to your collection. This coin features Adolf Wiedman's walking half dollar design on the obverse, with the lettering "In God We Trust", and a design by John Mercanti, the 12th chief engraver for the United States Mint on the reverse. Wiedman's design is not unique to this coin, it was also featured on the obverse of the half dollar between 1916 and 1947.

This 1988 Silver Eagle is 99.93% silver, 0.07% copper and bears the San Francisco mint mark. As a proof coin, it has a higher numismatic value than the uncirculated coins from the Philadelphia mint.

History of the 1988-S American Silver Eagle

There were just over 5,000,000 uncirculated American Silver Eagles produced in Philadelphia, while the San Francisco mint produced 557,370 proof examples of the coin, each containing one troy ounce of silver. The melt value of a silver eagle is approximately $27 as of 9/8/2020, however proof coins that have been taken care of well have a higher numismatic value.

Design specifics

Each dollar piece has a diameter of 40.6 mm, and weighs 31.101 grams. The proofs were minted in San Francisco, and as such an "S" mint mark is visible on the reverse of the coin.

American Silver Eagle Value

The American Silver Eagle contains one troy ounce of silver, making the silver content of the coin of higher worth than the face value of the coin. The American Silver Eagles minted in Philadelphia vary in value due to the unpredictability of their condition. Many coins have been handled poorly or stored badly, leaving them discolored or damaged. The proofs minted in San Francisco, by their nature as more desirable collectibles, are typically cared for more carefully by coin enthusiasts and will have a higher numismatic value as a result.
