1986 Silver Eagle History
The 1986 coin obverse features the Walking Liberty design used on the half dollar coins from 1916 to 1947 and was designed by Adolph Weinman. In this image, Lady Liberty is holding the American flag and a branch.
The reverse side was designed by John Mercanti and has an iconic American eagle behind a shield. The design is patriotic, symbolizing America's freedom, peace, and pride. It also features thirteen stars, which form a triangle above the eagle’s head and represent America's original colonies. The Latin phrase ‘E Pluribus Unum’ is incorporated into the shield and means ‘Out of Many, One.’
Mintage and mintmarks
The American eagle coins have been struck at three different mints. Earlier coins minted up until 1992 were produced at the San Fransisco Mint and struck from 99% silver and 1% Copper. Between 1993 and 1999, the Philadelphia Mint produced the coins. From the millennium to the present day, the silver eagle coins are struck at the West Point and San Fransisco Mints.
The 1986 silver eagle was minted in three different forms, with the Proof carrying a ‘P, S or W on the reverse to show where they were minted. 1,446,778 proof silver eagle coins were minted in 1986.
1986-S Proof silver eagle coins have a higher value then circulated and uncirculated coins from this year. The 1986 silver eagles are of particular interest to collectors as they were the first coins minted. Each of the proof coins is in fantastic condition; they’ve been struck using 99% silver and have a mirror-like finish.
