In 1986, a new bullion coin program was created, known as the American Eagle program. These coins were approved under the Bullion Coin Act of 1985. America's dream of becoming a world-class producer of fine bullion coins was realized with the silver eagle's production. The coins proved very popular with coin collectors across America and the world. Silver Eagles are popular with international investors, coin collectors, dealers, and the general public.

1986 silver eagle history

Silver eagle coins were minted between 1986 and the present day. Between 1986 and 1992, the proof silver eagles were struck at the San Fransisco Mint. They were then minted at the Philidelphia mint for seven years from 1993 to 2000. Since the year 2001 to the present-day, proof coins are minted at both the West Point and San Fransisco Mints.

The design for the silver eagle was created by John Mercanti, who was a chief engraver at the U.S Mint. The coin's obverse features Lady Liberty and incorporates Adolf Weinman's design of the Walking Liberty half dollar. The coins reverse features the heraldic eagle. Each coin was minted using .999, and proof coins have a mirror-like finish.
