The Proof American Gold Eagle Coins were first made in 1986 and still made today. They were made in four denominations that contain 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, and 1/10oz of gold. The obverse design was taken from the Augustus Saint-Gaudens design originally used on the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coins that were minted from 1907-1933. The reverse of the coin was designed by Miley Busiek and features a family of eagles. The Proof American Gold Eagles were minted at the Philadelphia Mint from 1986-1993 and then minted from 1994-present day at the West Point Mint. The Proof American Gold Eagle is a stunning piece and a favorite among collectors because it features a watery, mirror like finish.
