1968-S Kennedy Half Dollar

The Kennedy Half Dollar was first minted in 1964, and it was created to celebrate the memory of President John F Kennedy. President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, and the coin was quickly designed using slightly modified versions of pre-existing designs. It proved to be a very popular coin due to its commemorative nature as well as its high silver content, and it was produced in very large numbers. Public demand made the coins scarce and kept them out of circulation, so later runs were minted without a mint mark and a reduced silver content to discourage collectors.

San Francisco Mint

In 1968, the mint mark was returned to the coin, and the Denver Mint produced a sizable mintage of the Kennedy Half Dollar for circulation. There was a much smaller run produced in the San Francisco Mint, and these coins were produced as proofs which gave them a mirror-like finish. The design of the coins remained the same as other Kennedy Half Dollars, and these coins contained the S mint mark.

1968-S Kennedy Half Dollar Value

The 1968-S Kennedy Half Dollars were produced as proofs and were not circulated. They are inexpensive and are usually found in good condition due to the lack of circulation. They are more collectible for their shiny appearance than for their monetary value.
