The U.S. Mint created a unique finish on coins in the mid 1960s that hasn't been seen since! The U.S. Mint moved the production of proof coins from the Philadelphia Mint to the San Francisco Mint, but the transition took a few years, resulting in a hiatus in proof coins being made. Instead of proof sets, the U.S. Mint introduced a new Special Mint Set from 1965 to 1967 to cater to collectors. These "special" finish coins have a superior finish that is uniquely in between uncirculated and proof. Each Special Mint Set included a Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. This 1965 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar is from the first Special Mint Set ever produced.
