Did you know that the US Mint struck two different reverses for the business strike Franklin Half Dollar, by accident? Regular Franklin Half Dollars were intended to only use the Type 1 reverse In 1956, the U.S. Mint wound up with two types of reverse designs on the Proof Franklin Half Dollar. The Type 1 had four feathers the left side of the eagles' wings beside its perch, and an undetailed chest. The public was dissatisfied with this representation, so The Mint then modified the reverse to a new Type 2 design. This resulted in a design with three feathers on the left side of the eagles' wings, and sharpened the details on the neck and chest. Americans wanted the national bird to be depicted properly! This change was only for the Proof finish Franklin Half Dollars however, so the 3-feathered Type 2 reverse being found years later on a business strike 1959 Franklin Half is a real rarity!
