1953-S Wheat Penny

1953-S Wheat Penny

The 1953-S Wheat Penny had a total mintage of over 181 million coins struck at the San Francisco Mint. The 1953-S Wheat Penny is relatively common in many circulated and uncirculated grades, but can be harder to find in some of the highest grades. When looking for that ideal 1953-S Lincoln Cent to add to your collection, seek out one with a sharp strike, attractive surfaces, and overall great eye appeal.

History of the 1953-S Wheat Penny

The 1953-S Wheat Penny would make a great addition to any Wheat Penny series collection. This is a more affordable coin, even in some of the highest Mint State grades. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. At the time, President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the S mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.

1953-S Wheat Penny Worth

The 1953-S Wheat Penny value ranges from a few hundred dollars to upwards of three thousand dollars for some of the highest grades available on the market today. The Wheat Penny comes in colors ranging brown to brown-red to red, with the Full Red versions typically commanding a higher price. The Wheat Penny series is an affordable series for those looking to build a circulated grade coin collection for only a few hundred dollars, and is also a steal for serious collectors as well.
