1949 Washington Quarter

1949 Washington Quarter

The 1949 Washington Quarter had a total mintage of just over 9 million coins from the Philadelphia Mint which could be considered somewhat small for the amount of coins that came out of Philadelphia for this series. Out of the coins produced in the 1940s, the 1949 Washington Quarter is one of the rarer coins available in higher Mint State grades. Finding an attractive 1949 Washington Quarter is possible with a little effort, and would make a great addition to a silver Washington Quarter series collection.

History of the 1949 Washington Quarter

The 1949 Washington Quarter has a relatively lower mintage than some of the other coins in the series from this mint. During the 1950s and 1960s, coins with a lower mintage were more desirable and sought after which resulted in those coins being saved in uncirculated rolls, but this one was always a little harder to find. The 1949 Washington Quarter often has a more marked-up and rough surface. The luster is usually more satiny than other coins in the series as well. It is difficult to find a 1949 Washington Quarter that has a clean surface. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flannagan in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of first United States President, George Washington’s birthday.

1949 Washington Quarter Value

The 1949 Washington Quarter value ranges to upwards of seventeen thousand dollars. This coin is a somewhat accessible one to fill out your Washington Quarter series collection, but will cost higher prices for higher grades. When looking for that perfect 1949 Washington Quarter to add to your collection, cherrypicking is advised to ensure you find one with a good strike and lustrous, attractive surfaces. The Washington Quarter features the profile of George Washington on the obverse of the coin. The reverse showcases the American Bald Eagle with its wings spread wide, clutching a bundle of arrows and floating over an olive branch.
