1949-D Jefferson Nickel

1949-D Jefferson Nickel

The 1949-D Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of over 36.4 million coins struck at the Denver Mint. This is one of the more common coins in the series, and with its higher mintage, it should be relatively easy to find in circulated grades up to about Mint State 64. In Mint State 65, the 1949-D Jefferson Nickel becomes more scarce, but it can still be found in uncirculated rolls. As this coin climbs higher into Mint State 66 and Mint State 67 grades, it becomes extremely scarce, especially with the Full Step designation which is believed to have less than a dozen known in existence.

History of the 1949-D Jefferson Nickel

Cherrypicking is advised with the 1949-D Jefferson Nickel. It’s possible to find relatively affordable coins in circulated grades, but the price climbs to a steeper premium in the highest Mint State grades with Full Steps. Full Step coins feature a fully struck staircase leading up to Jefferson’s Monticello home which is featured on the reverse of the coin. Felix Schlag designed the obverse of the coin to feature a profile of Thomas Jefferson himself. The Jefferson Nickel design has changed somewhat over the years, and the coin is still in production today.

1949-D Jefferson Nickel Value

The 1949-D Jefferson Nickel value ranges from around $1,300 to upwards of around $8,600 for the highest grades of the Mint State and Full Step designations. This is quite a jump in price, and the Full Step coins are known to command higher prices, especially is the case with the 1949-D Jefferson Nickel which is extremely scarce in Mint State 67. The 1949-D Jefferson Nickel would make a valuable addition to any Jefferson Nickel series collection.
