1946-S Jefferson Nickel

1946-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1946-S Jefferson Nickel had a much smaller mintage than the previous year, with just over 13.5 million coins struck at the San Francisco Mint. Unlike the popular and sought after “silver” war nickels between 1942 and 1945, the 1946-S no longer has the enlarged mint mark on it, although the ‘S’ mint mark can still be found to the side of the Monticello on the reverse. While this is a smaller mintage than many in the series, it’s still a plentiful coin that can be found in higher Mint State grades. Full Step versions only represent a small percentage of the overall population of this coin and are highly sought after by collectors.

History of the 1946-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1946-S Thomas Jefferson Nickel is a popular coin among collectors and is worth the effort to cherrypick to find the most value for what the coin offers. This coin is slightly more common than the 1946 Jefferson Nickel, but less common than the 1946-D Jefferson Nickel. With that being said, higher Mint State grades are available at more affordable prices than might be expected. This coin was designed by Felix Schlag. The obverse showcases the well-known Thomas Jefferson in profile, and the reverse of the coin features his Monticello home.

1946-S Jefferson Nickel Value

The 1946-S Jefferson Nickel value ranges from around $2,800 to upwards of $7,800 for the highest Mint State and Full Step versions of the coin sold and documented. It is possible to build a very affordable early Jefferson Nickel collection by seeking out circulated or lower Mint State coins. There is a wide range of prices for collectors of all types. The 1946-S Jefferson Nickel would certainly make a valuable addition to any Jefferson Nickel series collection.
