1940-S Wheat Penny

1940-S Wheat Penny

The 1940-S Wheat Penny had a total mintage of just under 113 million coins produced at the San Francisco Mint. This is a relatively higher mintage for Wheat Pennies struck at the San Francisco Mint in previous years. With a higher mintage, it’s not usually an issue trying to find the 1940-S Wheat Penny in circulated and uncirculated grades. When looking for your perfect coin, cherrypicking is advised to ensure a well-struck and attractive coin for your collection.

History of the 1940-S Wheat Penny

The 1940-S Wheat Penny is possible to find in the highest of Mint State grades in the full red varieties. The prices are reasonable for the coin as well. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. At the time, President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the S mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.

1940-S Wheat Penny Worth

The 1940-S Wheat Penny value ranges from around three hundred dollars to upwards of nine thousand dollars depending on the grade and coloring of the coin available. The Wheat Penny comes in colors ranging from brown to brown-red to red varieties, with the full red versions commanding the highest prices. The 1940-S Wheat Penny would make a great addition to any Lincoln Cent series collection.
