1940-S Jefferson Nickel

1940-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1940-S Jefferson Nickel had a total mintage of over 36 million coins struck at the San Francisco Mint. While this coin is relatively common in mid-range grades around Mint State 65 and 66, it is extremely rare in superb condition. While it is extremely rare, coins in higher grades are relatively affordable compared to some of the other coins in the series of similar quality. The 1940-S Thomas Jefferson Nickel appeared to have good strike qualities and is possible to find fully struck with the Full Step varieties available at a reasonable price as well.

History of the 1940-S Jefferson Nickel

The 1940-S Jefferson Nickel is worth cherrypicking to find the best coin for its value. Look for coins that are sharply struck with great overall eye appeal. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing profile of Thomas Jefferson and the reverse was designed by competition winner Felix Schlag and features the Monticello, which was Jefferson’s home. The ‘S’ mint mark can be found on the reverse of the coin next to the Monticello. The Jefferson Nickel is still in production and circulation today.

1940-S Jefferson Nickel Value

The 1940-S Jefferson Nickel value ranges between $1,800 and $5,000 for the highest Mint State and Full Step grades of the coin. The Full Step varieties show a full strike on the stairs leading up to the front of the Monticello on the reverse. Considering this coin often has good striking qualities, this is an excellent value for any coin in the series, especially an earlier one. The 1940-S Jefferson Nickel would make a great addition to any Jefferson Nickel series collection.
