1939 Jefferson Nickel

The 1939 Jefferson Nickel exploded in terms of a massive mintage compared to the previous year. This coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a total mintage of over 120 million coins. The mintage for this date and mint location had several varieties that weren’t as common in other coins in the series. There was a reverse of 1938, a reverse of 1940, and a doubled Monticello. What this means is that the 1939 Jefferson Nickel can be found in a variety of Mint State grades, but also a variety of different strikes. The doubled Monticello is unique because there are only three major Doubled Dies in the entire series, with this being the most prominent.

History of the 1939 Jefferson Nickel

The 1939 Jefferson Nickel had a massive mintage and it is entirely possible to cherrypick this series date to find just what you’re after. On the Double Die reverse of this coin, the words Monticello and five cents are doubled on the reverse of the coin. Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson Nickel and was the winner of a coin design content. This coin followed the Buffalo Nickel and is still in production today, although the designs have slightly changed over the years. The coin features Thomas Jefferson and his Monticello home, hence the name Jefferson Nickel.
