1934 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

1934 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The 1934 Walking Liberty Half Dollar marks the return of production of this coin to Philadelphia after a 13-year hiatus. No Walking Liberty silver half dollars were produced in Philadelphia between 1921 and 1934. The design of this patriotic-themed coin was the result of a Commission of Fine Arts competition. The winner of the competition, Adolph Weinman, was given a commissioned to design this coin and the dime. This design was finally approved after previous other designs were rejected. The coin generally maintains its original thick and creamy luster. Like most coins originating from Philadelphia, it is generally well struck.

1934 Walking Liberty Half Dollar Value and Scarcity

The 1934 Walking Liberty Half Dollar value can range from $9 in lower circulated grades to $75 in higher grades making it an easily accessible coin. About half of all the mintage of this coin in 1934 came out of Philadelphia.  Even in the midst of The Great Depression, many of these coins were saved in uncirculated condition. There are still many rolls of uncirculated coins in the hands of collectors.  Because of its general availability, this is an excellent entry coin for collectors.  The 1934 Walking Liberty is readily available in mint condition. For 1934, more Philadelphia coins were initially saved than those from Denver or San Francisco. This is one of the easiest from the 1930’s in this issue to find in Gem condition. Therefore Walking Liberty half dollar key dates do not include this coin in any condition.
