1928-D Mercury Dime

1928-D Mercury Dime

The 1928-D Mercury Dime had a total mintage of over 4.1 million coins struck at the Denver Mint. This coin can be difficult to find in higher Mint State grades and many of them max out around MS64, although Full Band versions can be found in higher grades. The 1928-D Mercury Head Dime commands a higher price for lower Mint State grades, and would demand a premium if found in higher grades.

History of the 1928-D Mercury Dime

When looking for a 1928-D Mercury Dime, it’s important to seek out a well-struck coin with attractive surfaces and a nice luster. Cherrypicking is even more important with this issue date and mint due to the difficulty of finding sharply struck coins that are graded higher. The Mercury Dime was designed by Adolph A. Weinman. It features a profile portrait of a younger Lady Liberty wearing a winged cap that symbolizes “liberty of thought.” The reverse of the coin features the “D” mint mark at the bottom and depicts a fasces, olive branch, and an ax.

1928-D Mercury Dime Value

The 1928-D Mercury Dime value ranges between $6,600 and $36,000 for the highest grades of the coin all the way up to the Full Band versions. The Full Band distinction comes when the center bands on the fasces on the reverse of the coin are distinct, separate, and sharply struck. The 1928-D Mercury Dime is a coin worth seeking out carefully to find the nicest coin. It would make a worthwhile addition to any Mercury Dime series collection.
