1925-S Peace Dollar
Commonly found in lower grades, the 1925-S Peace dollar is a great starter coin for a new collector. Due to the strike being poor, as was common from the San Francisco Peace silver dollars, the higher grade gems are extremely rare. In fact, MS-65 is the highest grade known. The 1925-S Peace silver dollar is usually found to have a frosty lustre, grainy texture, and a light strike, so if you encounter a full strike then it’s probably best to hold onto it!
History of the 1925-S Peace Dollar
The 1925-S Peace Silver Dollar was minted in a relatively small quantity, especially compared to its Philadelphia minted counterpart. It’s believed most of the 1925-S Peace dollars were released by the end of the 1920s, making circulated grades easily available today compared to other Peace dollars. However, around 1938 many bags were released from the treasury and repeated again in 1942. These bags were most likely purchased by keen investors who understood the value of these elusive coins. It is thought that only a few thousand were sold between 1942 and 1943.
It’s believed the last 15 or so bags were sold directly to dealers in the mid-1950s, and its quality gems have remained a rarity to collections until today.
