1920-D Wheat Penny

1920-D Wheat Penny

The 1920-D Wheat Penny had an average-sized mintage of over 49 million coins struck at the Denver Mint. The 1920-D Wheat Penny is a fairly common coin in circulated grades, but as you move up to higher Mint State uncirculated grades, this is a very scarce coin to find. The red versions are even more rare, and would be worth a significant amount if they were found.

History of the 1920-D Wheat Penny

The 1920-D Wheat Penny is a more affordable coin within the series, but also a more elusive one in higher grades. This could possibly be due to the fact that the Denver Mint would regularly use dies that were worn out, making the strike of these coins soft. Cherrypicking is advised to ensure a sharp strike and attractive luster. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the D mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat

1920-D Wheat Penny Worth

The 1920-D Wheat Penny value ranges from just under $1,000 for higher grade brown varieties of the coin. The price moves higher towards $30,000 for the red varieties, and it’s more difficult to find as these coins are rare. The 1920-D Wheat Penny can make a great addition to any Wheat Penny series collection, and just require a little effort to find just what you’re looking for.
