1917 Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I)

1917 Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I)

The 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter came in two different varieties. Variety I had a total mintage of over 8.7 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This was the second issue of the series. The first version of the 1917 Standing Quarter also had the exposed breast of Lady Liberty, and there was an uproar by some groups that demanded the halt and recall of all of these “immoral” coins. Over 55 million coins were released with the exposed version of naked Lady Liberty before the Mint finally succumbed to the pressure of interest groups and redesigned the coin with the breast covered in chain mail armor.

History of the 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I)

The 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter of the first variety was a special coin because it still had the original designs created by Herman A. MacNeil. This coin can be found with frosty white or satiny luster, and it’s possible to find them with a fully struck head, which is what the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter lacked in many of its coins. The 1917 Standing Liberty Coin is sometimes rarer in circulated grades compared to the future coins in the series, and can be found in Mint State condition.

1917 Standing Liberty Quarter (Variety I) Value

The 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter value for variety I issues ranges between $11,000 and almost $33,000. This is a valuable coin that would make a great addition to any Standing Liberty Quarter series collection. It is worth the effort to find this special coin, and although it isn’t as highly sought after as the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, it is still one of the original designs, but at more affordable prices.
