1911-S Wheat Penny

1911-S Wheat Penny

The 1911-S Wheat Penny had a smaller mintage than some of the other coins in the early part of the Lincoln Cent series with only about 4 million total mintage from the San Francisco Mint. This is an attractive coin in most grades. It usually has a decent strike, and it is possible, with a little effort, to find a beautiful 1911-S Wheat Penny to add to your Wheat Penny series collection.

History of the 1911-S Wheat Penny

The 1911-S Wheat Penny is very scarce in Mint State and rare in Gem condition, making this a special coin to seek out. Cherrypicking is advised, but maybe less so with this specific coin that has an overall good quality when it comes to the 1911-S Wheat Penny. The Wheat Penny was designed by Victor David Brenner. At the time, President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to prepare new coin designs that had more artistic merit. He chose Brenner based on a plaque he created with Lincoln’s profile. The Wheat Penny depicts a bust and profile of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, with the S mint mark under the date. The reverse features two stalks of durum wheat.

1911-S Wheat Penny Worth

The 1911-S Wheat Penny value can range to upwards of around $3,000 for Mint State examples. Full Red examples can go for as high as $23,000. This is an attractive coin that would make a valuable addition to the Wheat Penny series. This series, in particular, is more accessible to those who want to build a full collection of coins at lower prices. A circulated series of Wheat Pennies can be just a few hundred dollars.
