1909 S Wheat Penny
The 1909-S Wheat Penny differs slightly from other wheat pennies from the same year, but it can easily be distinguished. This penny includes an “S” mint mark below the year, signaling that it was minted in San Francisco. It also lacks the letters “V.D.B.” near the bottom edge of the coin’s reverse, whereas the initials of designer Victor D. Brenner appeared on two other pennies that went into circulation that year. The change from the Indian Head Penny, in use since 1859, to the Wheat Penny, with a design that featured the profile of former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, coincided with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lincoln. Many private manufacturers were preparing for the 1909 anniversary by creating keepsakes of all kinds, and the U.S. government realized that it would be an ideal time to release the image of a former President on a coin. Until this point, only fictionalized depictions had appeared on coins, for fear that using a real person’s image seemed undemocratic.
The U.S. Mint did not allow newspapers to publish images of the coin prior to its release, only furthering the Lincoln craze and adding to speculation. Branches of the U.S. Treasury received shipments of each of the new Wheat Pennies ahead of the August 2, 1909 release. That morning, lines encircled the Treasury buildings and in some places the coins had to be rationed: in New York, applicants could obtain up to 100 pennies, while members of the public at the Philadelphia mint were limited to two per person.
