1909 S VDB Penny Design
The Wheat Penny is also often referred to as the Lincoln cent. This design was the first to regularly feature an actual person rather than a fictional depiction, such as “lady liberty.” Lincoln was chosen due to the 1909 centennial of his birth, as well as the-U.S. President Roosevelt’s interest in honoring a fellow Republican.
The President admired Brenner’s work on a 1907 plaque of Lincoln and met with him a year later. Correspondence from the time between Brenner and then-Mint Director Frank A. Leach show that from the beginning of Brenner’s work on the project he always worked on a Lincoln design, despite earlier plans between government officials and artists that had considered Native American imagery and eagle heads. Brenner’s other sculpting work included busts of statesmen, military leaders, clergymen, and academics.
