1896-S Barber Dime
The 1896-S Barber Dime had a smaller mintage than the previous year at just over 575,000 coins struck at the San Francisco Mint. The Barber Dime coins struck at the San Francisco Mint and New Orleans Mint were often more popular than some of the others mint locations. The 1896-S Barber Dime features the ‘S’ mint mark on the bottom of the reverse of the coin. It can be difficult to find this coin in the highest Mint State grades.
History of the 1896-S Barber Dime
The 1896-S Barber Dime is a valuable coin that can be found with nice details, toning, and a sharp strike. Cherrypicking is advised where possible if you come across this coin. The Barber Dime is part of the Barber coinage era. Charles Barber also designed the Barber Quarter and the Barber Half Dollar. The design on this coin features a right facing profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse wearing an olive branch crown with a ribbon, and a headband with “LIBERTY” inscribed on it. The reverse of the coin features a wreath of corn, oak and maple leaves, and wheat, and frames the word One Dime.
