1896-O Barber Dime

1896-O Barber Dime

The 1896-O Barber Dime had a total mintage of just 610,000 coins struck at the New Orleans Mint. The coins struck at the New Orleans Mint and San Francisco Mint were typically more popular and sought after by collectors. The 1896-O Barber Dime features the ‘O’ mint mark on the bottom of the reverse of the coin. It can be difficult to find this coin in higher grades.

History of the 1896-O Barber Dime

The 1896-O Barber Dime had a smaller mintage than many of the other coins in the series. The lower mintage added value to the coin, and also made it difficult to find in high Mint State grades depending on the coin. The Barber Dime is part of the Barber coinage era. Charles Barber also designed the Barber Quarter and the Barber Half Dollar. The design on this coin features a right facing profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse wearing an olive branch crown with a ribbon, and a headband with “LIBERTY” inscribed on it. The reverse of the coin features a wreath of corn, oak and maple leaves, and wheat, and frames the word One Dime.

1896-O Barber Dime Value

The 1896-O Barber Dime value can reach upwards of $20,000 for an MS66 graded coin, and any beyond that quality will command an even higher premium if found. The Barber Dime series can be found at more accessible prices by purchasing circulated coins. The 1896-O Barber Dime would make a valuable and attractive addition to any Barber coin series collection.
