1886 Indian Head Penny

1886 Indian Head Penny

The 1886 Indian Head Penny had a total mintage of just over 17.6 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This is a unique coin within the series because the obverse hub was changed when striking this coin, which offered up two different varieties of the 1886 Indian Head Penny. The two varieties differ by way of the word AMERICA and its positioning in comparison to the Native American headdress feathers. While the 1886 Indian Head Penny is possible to find in circulated and some Mint State grades, both varieties appear to be of equal scarcity, with the second variety being a little more rare than the first.

History of the 1886 Indian Head Penny

The 1886 Indian Head Penny is a worthwhile find, especially if collectors are interested in finding both varieties of the coin. Cherrypicking is advised to ensure which coin variety you are getting, as well as finding a coin that is well-struck with a nice luster. The coin was designed by James Longacre who was the Chief Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse shows the profile of a woman wearing a Native American Headdress, while the reverse features the words ONE CENT that are surrounded by a shield and a laurel wreath.
