History of the 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar

Although the 1878 Morgan Dollar with 8 tail feathers on the eagle was an error and revised within the same year to only have 7 feathers, some believed that there was an 8-feathers 1878-S Morgan Dollar mintage that existed. Due to this belief, many collectors had that 8 feather coin on their want list for the next half-century.

The majority of the 1878-S Morgan silver dollars remain in Mint state. They typically have excellent luster and are well struck. Many of the coins, however, are heavily bagmarked.
