1878 was the very first year of issue for the Morgan Silver Dollar series, and the coin's reverse design went through some growing pains early on. There were three total reverse design variations minted in the first year! The first '8-Tailfeather' design was only struck for a few weeks before changing to the '7-Tailfeather' reverse. However, as a result of residual impressions on the master die, a '7/8 Tailfeather' variation also made its way into circulation. This change was initially made after an orinthologist wrote a letter to the U.S. Mint informing them that eagles always have odd-numbered tail feathers, so the 8 feathers on the original design was incorrect.
This 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar has the "7TF Reverse of 1879", which means its reverse design features a rounded breast on the eagle, more depth to the arrows clutched in the eagle's talons, and 7 tail feathers. This is the final design that would be seen on the rest of the coins in the Morgan Silver Dollar series.
