1878 Morgan Dollar 7 Tail Feather Reverse of 1879
1878 was the very first year of issue for the Morgan Silver Dollar series, and the coin's reverse design went through some growing pains early on. There were three total reverse design variations minted in the first year!
The first reverse design '8-Tailfeather' would only be struck for a few weeks before changing to a '7-Tailfeather' reverse. The first of these changes resulted in two new dollars, '7-Tailfeather' and '7/8 Tailfeather', the latter a result of impressions of the master die beneath the seven tailfeathers.
This 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar has the "7TF Reverse of 1879", which means its reverse design features a rounded breast on the eagle, more depth to the arrows clutched in the eagle's talons, and 7 tail feathers.
