The Order of Assassins struck terror into the hearts of kings, shahs, viziers, and atabegs across the Middle East for almost 200 years. Known for their stealth, their subterfuge, and their silent methods of slaying—daggers were their weapon of choice—the Assassins executed hundreds of enemies of the Nizari Isma’ili state, including three caliphs and a Crusader King of Jerusalem, and were feared by Muslims and Christians alike. The name of the Order, derived from Ḥaššāšīn or hashish, is still used today as a word for a targeted political killing. The Order was exterminated by the Mongols at Khwarazm. This bronze jital, issued by the Shah of Khwarazm, was in circulation at that time, and may well have been used to pay for their services.
