While the motto "In God We Trust" seems ubiquitous across American currency these days, this was not always the case. After the Civil War over 150 years ago, Congress mandated that "In God We Trust" appear on all currency. However, not all coins and banknotes changed their designs immediately to accomodate the legislation. It wasn't until the mid-1900s that the motto showed up on every piece of circulating currency and coins. Until the 1960s, US currency was backed by real Silver in the Treasury. A $1 Silver Certificate was exchangable for 1 oz of Silver. These discontinued kinds of notes are very popular to collect as a piece of American numismatic history.

This set includes two $1 Silver Certificates before and after the motto was added to the dollar bill. The 1935 series $1 Silver Certificate was the final "no motto" series, and the 1957 Series $1 Silver Certificate was the first bank note to feature the motto, as well as the final $1 note backed by real Silver. Both of these bills are in stunning collector's quality circulated condition, and are presented in a storage album with details about each bank note. Add this incredible duo of $1 Silver Certificates to your collection today!
