This established a tradition of Philadelphia Mint struck coins not having a mintmark, until the first one was used in 1942. During World War II, nickels were struck with 35% silver to preserve nickel for the war effort, and to help distinguish these coins the "P" mint mark was added.
In 1979, the Susan B. Anthony dollar made waves as the first small size dollar coin in America, as well as the first circulating coin to feautre a real woman from American history. Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) was a remarkable pioneer for women's rights and a driving force that led to women gaining the right to vote. The original 1979 Susan B. Anthony Dollar surprisingly featured the "P" mint mark, then one year later the "P" mint mark was added to all circulating coins except the penny.
In 2017, the U.S. Mint added the "P" mint mark to Lincoln Cents for the first time as a special way to celebrate their 225th Anniversary. The 2017-P Lincoln Cent is now known as the first-ever penny with the Philadelphia Mint's marking. This was exclusive to the anniversary, with the mint mark once again disappearing in 2018 and onward.
