The Peace Dollar was introduced in 1921 as a replacement for the Morgan Silver Dollar to create a symbol of peace after the end of World War I. It was struck from 1921-1928, and then from 1934-1935. The beautiful and iconic imagery of Lady Liberty and an eagle of peace were famously designed by Anthony de Francisci. His designs won the U.S. Mint's contest to search for the best designs that were emblematic of peace for this new silver dollar. He also used his wife as the model for the portrait of Lady Liberty.
