This first series reimagines Lady Liberty fighting for freedom throughout American history. The second of four installments in the series brings Lady Liberty to the mid 1800s as a Union soldier in the Civil War, proudly defending the freedom of the United States. On the obverse, Adolph A. Weinman's Lady Liberty wears a Union forage cap like the Union soldiers in the Civil War. Lady Liberty also holds a musket fitted with a bayonet, which was commonly used at the beginning of the war, along with a saber at her hip. The flintlock musket was slowly phased out during the Civil War, but many soldiers on both sides were actually armed with conversion muskets which were flintlock muskets that were modified to utilize a percussion ignition system instead of the outdated flintlock system. Behind her is a 33-star American flag representing the 33 states in the Union during the Civil War. The reverse features an antique map highlighting the Mason-Dixon line, marking the divide between the Union and the Confederacy, displayed behind the striking Landing Eagle design of Emily Damstra.
