The Burnished Silver Eagle was first introduced in 2006, but this 2011-W is only the fourth year of issue for the Burnished finish! This is due to a silver shortage in the late 2000s, causing a hiatus with no Burnished Silver Eagles being produced in 2009 and 2010. This 2011-W Burnished Silver Eagle is the first burnished Silver Eagle to be minted after the break. 2011 also marked the 25th Anniversary of the American Silver Eagle program. This is an important date in the series, because it was the silver anniversary!
Only 409,766 of these 2011-W Burnished Silver Eagles were struck for the anniversary, which is just a fraction of the mintage of the Uncirculated and Proof finishes from the same year. Burnished Silver Eagles are highly sought-after because of their scarcity, which is due to the complex minting process that results in the unique satin-matte finish.
