Position A indicates the coins edge can be read correctly, only when the coins obverse is facing down or if the reverse side is facing up. Minted at the Denver Mint, as indicated by the 'D' mint mark, the coin features a detailed portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes on the obverse. This portrait captures the distinctive facial features and hairstyle of Hayes, offering a glimpse into the late 19th-century era of his presidency. Above the portrait, the inscription "Rutherford B. Hayes" clearly identifies the figure depicted. Below the portrait, the inscriptions "19th President" and "1877-1881" are arched, marking the duration of Hayes's term in office.
