2009-W $50 Gold Buffalo Coin

2009-W $50 Gold Buffalo Coin

The 2009-W $50 Gold Buffalo coin had a total mintage of just under 50,000 coins struck at the West Point Mint. Due to the lack of blank gold planchets needed in 2009 to strike these coins, the mint had to cancel many of the gold buffalo related coins in this year. While this is true, it’s still possible to find this 2009-W 1 oz Gold Buffalo in a perfect Proof 70 grade at an affordable price, especially compared to many of the others in the series.

History of the 2009-W 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin

The 2009-W 1 oz Gold Buffalo coin has a smaller mintage than some of the other coins in the series, yet it is still relatively affordable making this a coin that would add value to a collection. James Earle Fraser designed this American Gold Buffalo and based the designs off of the Type Indian Head Nickel. This unique and beloved 24 karat gold bullion coin features a Native American chief on the obverse that was inspired by three different sitting chiefs. It also features the ‘W’ mint mark on this Proof coin. The reverse features a bison standing atop a mound.

2009-W $50 Buffalo Gold Coin Value

The 2009-W 1 oz Gold Buffalo coin value reaches upwards of $2,200 for this Deep Cameo Proof coin in perfect Proof 70 condition. This is a small premium compared to others in the series, and is a worthwhile investment as the prices of gold continue to rise. Seeking out a well-struck 2009-W $50 Gold Buffalo is a fun endeavor that would make a valuable addition to any American Gold Buffalo series collection.
